Thank you to the woman who helped us
I left an abusive relationship 2 years ago and had filed for an emergency protection order with the court then went into hiding with my child. Although I worked full time, due to the timing, I didn’t have much for money.
A week later, I went to a Walmart on the south side to avoid being seen by any one we would have known. I loaded the grocery cart with fresh food and kept my head down, hat pulled over my head, jacket hiked to cover my face.
While I was in line, a woman started to chat with me. Inquiring about the spaghetti squash, how to cook it and prepare it. Although I didn’t want to talk and was terrified, she kept on chatting. I just got paid and was capable of doing so at the cashier. After the girl at the till was done scanning, she told me the total. $150.00 plus change. The woman in line that was talking to me about the squash, gently nudged me aside and said “I’ve got this.” I stood there stunned for what felt minutes, spoke back and said “I’m okay, I can do this. She kept on insisting. I cried in her arms, said thank you and left.
I still feel that I should have gotten her name to repay her. Rather, I’ve paid it forward and hope she knows this.
